Countries Respond to UEFA President's Criticism of Expanded World Cup Format

ATLANTA ― The 2026 World Cup is set to be the largest ever, featuring 48 teams, but the expansion has sparked controversy among some football officials. Aleksander Ceferin, the president of the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA), expressed his dissatisfaction with the broader tournament field, stating, "We have a lot of matches that are completely uninteresting," according to a Slovenian news outlet. He acknowledged, however, that the opportunity for smaller nations to participate is significant.

Ceferin's remarks quickly incited a wave of criticism. On Sunday, football associations from 13 nations, including Cape Verde, Curacao, and Uzbekistan, issued a joint statement condemning his comments. "We respectfully but firmly reject these comments. For our countries, there is no such thing as an unimportant World Cup match. For Cape Verde, Curacao, and Uzbekistan, qualification for the FIFA World Cup represents a historic achievement and the realization of a dream shared by generations," the statement emphasized.

The statement also highlighted the emotional significance for countries like the Democratic Republic of Congo and Haiti, which are making a return to the World Cup stage after long absences. "To suggest that these matches are somehow less important is deeply disappointing and fails to recognize the efforts, sacrifices, and aspirations of players, coaches, clubs, football leaders, and supporters across the world," it added.

When approached for comment, Cape Verde's manager Leitao Brito, known as Bubista, chose to focus on the positives. Ahead of a match against Spain, he remarked, "We are happy to be here. I believe it is an opportunity for teams and smaller countries to have a chance to be able to play and compete in the World Cup like we're doing." Bubista emphasized the pride of representing their nation, stating, "Our flag will be flying—that's the most important thing—among the biggest football flags around the world."
