Crystal Lake Secures Second State Title, Defeating Morton in Championship Match
Morton’s remarkable journey came to a close just shy of a state championship, as the Crystal Lake Central Tigers claimed their second Class 2A title in three years with a 3-1 victory on Saturday, June 6, at North Central College. Despite the defeat, the Potters received a heartfelt standing ovation from their supporters at the conclusion of the match.
The Potters struggled to contain standout player Addison Shaffer, who netted two goals for Crystal Lake. Her first came in the 30th minute when she skillfully maneuvered past Morton goalkeeper Adly Hilt and several defenders to score in the lower right corner. Shaffer’s second goal was a penalty kick in the 66th minute, awarded after she was fouled by Morton’s Marley Rosales.
Just before Shaffer's penalty, Morton’s Izzy Ripka had equalized with a goal from a corner kick in the 65th minute, marking a brief moment of hope for the Potters. However, Crystal Lake sealed their victory in the final minute when Ella Bechler launched a long-range shot that found the net, adding an insurance goal.
Morton concluded its historic season with an impressive record of 26 wins, 2 losses, and 1 draw. Their only previous loss this season was against Peoria Notre Dame on March 30. This year marked a significant milestone for the Potters, who made their inaugural state tournament appearance after defeating Waterloo 5-2 earlier in the week.
