Cubs Acquire Yosver Zulueta from Mariners in Cash Deal
The Chicago Cubs have made a strategic move by acquiring pitcher Yosver Zulueta from the Seattle Mariners in a minor trade, as reported by Francys Romero. The transaction took place on Sunday and involves the Cubs sending cash considerations to Seattle for the 28-year-old right-hander.
Zulueta, who was designated for assignment on June 10, has yet to make an appearance in Major League Baseball this season. He has a record of 2-3 with a 5.75 ERA over 22 outings at Triple-A Tacoma, where he allowed just 20 hits in 20.1 innings, but struggled with control, issuing 16 walks.
In previous seasons, Zulueta recorded a 1-0 record with a 6.14 ERA in 2025 through seven relief appearances with the Cincinnati Reds, and he posted a 0-0 record with a 4.96 ERA in 12 games in 2024. A Cuban native, he joined the Mariners earlier this year in a trade that sent minor league pitcher Dusty Revis to the Reds.
During spring training, Zulueta showcased his potential, making eight appearances out of the Mariners' bullpen. He struck out 10 batters while allowing three walks and six hits, finishing with a commendable 3.86 ERA over seven innings.
This acquisition comes at a crucial time for the Cubs, who are dealing with significant injuries in their bullpen. With relievers Shelby Miller and Porter Hodge sidelined for the season due to Tommy John surgery, and Hunter Harvey and Riley Martin also on the 60-day injured list, Zulueta provides much-needed depth to the team's pitching roster.
Further updates on this developing story are expected in the coming days.
