Deion Sanders lands on ESPN's 'retirement watch' list for 2026
The past offseason featured a chaotic coaching carousel that saw several big-name head coaches lose their jobs and many blue-blood programs, including Michigan, LSU, Auburn, and Florida, name new head coaches.
As the 2026 spring camps begin, ESPN's Adam Rittenberg broke out his coaching hot seat tiers, ranging from "the hottest of hot" to "retirement watch."
Perhaps unsurprisingly, given his recent health scares, Colorado head coach Deion Sanders comes in under the "retirement watch" tier. Sanders is joined by North Carolina's Bill Belichick and Iowa's Kirk Ferentz. Here's what Rittenberg said about the CU head man:
Sanders enters his fourth season at Colorado and has already exceeded some initial projections for how long he would be in Boulder. He enjoys living and working there and has significant influence on how Colorado operates its program. But Sanders' repeated health problems, including bladder removal and reconstruction surgery last spring, could ultimately limit how long he coaches the Buffaloes, who went from nine wins in 2024 to nine losses last season. The question around Sanders, who turns 59 in August, seems less about whether he would leave Colorado for another college job, but how long his health will hold up. He'll have another chance this fall to elevate the program again. -- Rittenberg
Rittenberg makes a good point that after the first two offseasons in Boulder, questions arose whether Sanders would leave for the NFL or a more prestigious college job. Now, those questions are no longer about better head-coaching openings but rather about how long Sanders will coach in general.
For Colorado fans, the fact that Sanders seems locked into Boulder rather than surveying the job market is great news. Who knows how long his health permits him to stick around in Boulder, but he doesn't appear to be on the hot seat in terms of a traditional firing.
