Detroit Tigers Acquire James Outman from Minnesota Twins
The Detroit Tigers have announced the acquisition of outfielder James Outman, who was claimed off waivers from the Minnesota Twins on Thursday. This move comes as the Twins made room on their roster for Royce Lewis’ return, leading to Outman's designation for assignment.
Outman originally joined the Twins in a trade with the Los Angeles Dodgers, where he was exchanged for reliever Brock Stewart during last season's trade deadline. While his defensive skills have been noteworthy, his offensive struggles have overshadowed his contributions on the field. This season, he played 49 games for Minnesota, primarily serving as a defensive replacement, and recorded a disappointing batting average of .156 over 64 at-bats.
In his rookie year with the Dodgers in 2023, Outman had a standout performance, finishing third in the National League Rookie of the Year voting and becoming the starting center fielder. He achieved a .248 batting average, hit 23 home runs, and collected 70 RBIs, all significant career highs. However, his performance has sharply declined since then, with a slash line of .144/.235/.284 over 374 plate appearances in the following seasons, marking him as one of the highest strikeout players in that timeframe.
The Twins had hoped that a change of scenery would revitalize Outman’s offensive capabilities when they traded for him. Unfortunately, his continued struggles have led to questions regarding the decision, especially given the Twins' existing depth in left-handed outfield talent. In total, Outman batted .151 during his 86 games with the Twins, with a staggering 41.4% strikeout rate this season among those with at least 48 plate appearances.
Now out of minor league options, Outman will join the Tigers' major league roster. His skill set is anticipated to enhance Detroit's defensive and baserunning strategies, as the organization looks to help him regain his offensive form. With a crowded outfield that includes Byron Buxton, Trevor Larnach, and rising star Austin Martin, Outman’s lack of offensive production made him expendable for the Twins.
