Diamondbacks Fall Short Against Reds in Tight Contest
The Arizona Diamondbacks faced off against the Cincinnati Reds in a game they could have certainly claimed, but ultimately fell short, losing 2-1. Michael Soroka showcased his impressive return to form, reminiscent of his 2019 Rookie of the Year runner-up season, by pitching seven strong innings, allowing just two hits and striking out seven batters.
Despite outpacing the Reds in offensive opportunities with seven hits, three walks, and additional baserunners from hit-by-pitches and a fielding error, the Diamondbacks struggled to capitalize. They had nine runners reach scoring position throughout the game but failed to convert those chances into runs.
The game began on a high note for Arizona when Corbin Carroll hit a solo home run on the very first pitch he faced from Reds pitcher Rhett Lowder. A walk by Nolan Arenado and a stolen base followed, putting the Diamondbacks up 1-0 early. However, the Reds quickly answered back in the third inning, tying the game at 1-1 after a double from Matt McLain and a bloop single by Edwin Arroyo.
As the game progressed, Soroka maintained his dominance, not allowing any further hits after the third inning. Unfortunately for the Diamondbacks, their offense continued to falter, leaving multiple runners stranded in scoring positions. The Reds took the lead in the eighth inning when Juan Morillo allowed a home run to Noelvi Marte, which proved to be the decisive blow.
In the end, despite their efforts, the Diamondbacks were unable to respond in the ninth, leading to a frustrating loss. With Zac Gallen set to pitch in the upcoming game against Cincinnati's Adam Abbott, the Diamondbacks will be looking to regroup and secure a series victory.
