Dodgers Surrender 5-Run Lead in Heartbreaking 9-8 Loss to Pirates

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Shohei Ohtani prefers to stay out of his catchers' way while on the mound, believing it’s their responsibility to challenge umpire calls regarding balls and strikes. However, this strategy may have contributed to a disappointing 9-8 defeat for the Los Angeles Dodgers against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Wednesday night.

The Dodgers held a commanding five-run lead, thanks in part to Ryan Ward’s first major league grand slam, as Ohtani entered the seventh inning looking to secure his fifth consecutive win. Yet, the tide turned unexpectedly, marking a rare slip for the two-time reigning champions.

After Pirates rookie Tyler Callihan hit a single and Jake Mangum reached on a swinging bunt, Ohtani faced Pittsburgh's Brandon Lowe, falling behind 3-0 on close calls for two 98 mph fastballs. Catcher Dalton Rushing opted not to challenge the calls, and Ohtani, mindful of the single challenge left, chose not to risk it. Lowe capitalized on this decision, hitting a two-run double that ultimately ended Ohtani’s night on the mound and ignited a five-run surge by the Pirates in the eighth inning.

Reflecting on the moment, Ohtani expressed regret, saying, “I usually let the catchers make that determination. But looking back, I think situationally, how important it was that at-bat, looking back I think I could have done a few challenges.” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts acknowledged the complexity of challenge decisions, trusting the players who have the best perspective on the field.

Despite the setback, the Dodgers remained in a favorable position until the eighth inning, where Callihan's three-run homer shifted the momentum. Spencer Horwitz then added a two-run shot, creating a buffer just as Ohtani hit a two-run homer in the ninth to narrow the gap.

Ohtani, who exhibited some vulnerabilities during his debut at PNC Park, recognized the need for better communication with Rushing, especially as starter Will Smith heads to the injured list. Nevertheless, Ohtani is eager to return to action, stating, “I’m always going to be prepared to play tomorrow.”
