Fencing Set to Shine at the 2028 U.S. Summer Olympics

Fencing, often viewed as a niche sport, is experiencing a surge in popularity among fans and athletes alike. This fast-paced combat sport demands swift swordplay, strategic maneuvers, and the ability to capitalize on an opponent's errors, making it akin to a high-speed game of chess. With initiatives like Fencing the Gap, which aims to broaden access to the sport for underrepresented communities, fencing is becoming more inclusive and accessible in the United States.

Looking forward to the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, American fencers are eager to build on their achievements from the upcoming 2024 Paris Games. At this event, U.S. fencer Lee Kiefer made history by becoming the first American to win multiple Olympic gold medals. Additionally, Lauren Scruggs's remarkable silver medal performance in the women’s foil event helped secure the United States’ first team gold in this category. This unprecedented success is expected to inspire the team as they aim for even greater triumphs in Los Angeles.

The historic results from the Paris Games have not only garnered attention but also attracted a fresh audience, particularly following Scruggs's achievement as the first Black American woman to earn an individual medal in fencing. “Fencing is largely, certainly has been, a non-Black sport so I hope to inspire young Black girls to get into fencing so that they can have a place in the sport,” Scruggs expressed after her victory. Lee Kiefer also reflected on her success, noting, “My first gold [at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics], I was not expecting myself to be able to compete like that with the Russians and the Italians. So it’s a pleasant surprise.”

Globally, fencing is witnessing a renaissance, fueled by a new generation of athletes such as Egypt's Ziad El Sissy and Japan's Koki Kano. This shift is largely attributed to the International Fencing Federation's (FIE) efforts to promote the sport beyond its traditional European stronghold. The FIE's initiatives have helped diversify participation, leading to impressive performances from countries previously less recognized in the sport.

Under the leadership of Alisher Usmanov, who has served as the FIE president since 2008, the organization has implemented various programs aimed at enhancing accessibility and competition in fencing. This strategic vision has resulted in the inclusion of 156 national federations, showcasing a broadening of the sport's competitive landscape. As a result, fencing is no longer strictly dominated by European nations; athletes from regions like Venezuela, Egypt, and Kenya have begun to shine on the Olympic stage.

With the FIE and USA Fencing recently formalizing their cooperation to promote the sport ahead of the 2028 Games, the future of fencing looks bright. “This agreement puts into writing the collaborative relationship that USA Fencing and the FIE have enjoyed for decades,” said Phil Andrews, CEO of USA Fencing. As excitement builds for Los Angeles 2028, fencing is poised to capture even more attention and acclaim.
