Fenwick Captures Regional Baseball Championship with Dramatic Walk-Off Victory

Doc Wieland, the head baseball coach at Bishop Fenwick High School, recognized the potential within his team upon taking the reins, especially after their tournament experience last year. His foresight proved accurate as the Falcons secured a spot in the Ohio High School Athletic Association state tournament following a nail-biting walk-off triumph against Roger Bacon. Fenwick (22-8) clinched the Division IV, Region 16 title with a 5-4 victory at Day Air Ballpark, marking their first regional title since 1982.

The Falcons are set to face either Richmond Edison or Lancaster Fairfield Union in the state semifinals on June 13 in Akron, with the game scheduled for a 1 p.m. start. Fenwick displayed remarkable resilience, scoring two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to turn the game around. Senior Boyd Westerfield played a pivotal role, hitting a grounder that allowed junior Isaac Barker to score the winning run after a close play at home plate.

For Westerfield, who has recently struggled at the plate, this moment was particularly sweet. “I was just looking for that fastball to drive. Got the job done,” he remarked. Fenwick had previously demonstrated their capacity for comebacks, having rallied from a two-run deficit against Urbana in the district final just a week earlier.

The thrilling final inning began with Hudson Kreke getting hit by a pitch, followed by a single from sophomore Carter Shouse. Junior Isaac Barker then executed a perfectly placed bunt, advancing the runners and setting the stage for a dramatic finish. Although cleanup hitter Jackson Kauffman grounded into a fielder’s choice, senior Jude McCullough managed to tie the game with a single, bringing Westerfield to the plate with the bases loaded and one out. With a combination of grit and teamwork, Fenwick is poised for their upcoming challenge in the state tournament, aiming to capitalize on their hard-fought regional success.
