Fernando Tatis Jr. Breaks Home Run Drought with 451-Foot Blast

After a staggering 56 games without a home run, San Diego Padres second baseman Fernando Tatis Jr. finally made his mark in the 2026 season with a remarkable 451-foot homer against the Washington Nationals on Saturday. Tatis, known for his previous season of 42 home runs, had not hit a ball out of the park since his last MLB homer on September 27, 2025.

The long-awaited home run was a powerful shot to left field off the pitch from Foster Griffin, marking a significant milestone for Tatis, who had gone 238 plate appearances without finding the stands. The moment was a relief for the player, who had shown signs of improvement leading up to the game, boasting an impressive 1.023 OPS over his last nine outings.

Despite the lengthy drought, Tatis had been gradually improving at the plate, recording 11 hits in his last 20 at-bats and 15 in his previous 33. Although his season OPS still lingers below .700, there is a sense of optimism surrounding his performance as he aims to regain his status as one of baseball's standout players.

This home run not only marked a personal victory for Tatis but also highlighted the unusual nature of his drought, as 394 players had already hit home runs this season prior to his breakthrough. With Tatis now off the mark, only two players remain in the league with over 200 plate appearances and no home runs in 2026.
