FIFA Enhances World Cup Press Conference Translations, Focusing Solely on Spanish

In response to a recent incident involving a Mexican journalist, FIFA is revising its translation policies for press conferences during the 2026 World Cup. The change comes after a video circulated widely showing a FIFA official denying a Spanish question from Rodrigo Ornelas of TV Azteca prior to the Morocco-Brazil group match held at New Jersey Stadium.

Ornelas sought to ask a question in Spanish to Morocco's Achraf Hakimi, who is fluent in the language due to his Spanish heritage. The situation escalated until Hakimi intervened, expressing his appreciation for Mexican fans by stating, “Really proud to have fans in your country, I love Mexico, I’m happy that you guys love me.”

Following the backlash from the incident, a report by Kyle Bonn in Sporting News revealed that FIFA will now provide Spanish translation for all press conferences. Until this point, translations were limited to English and languages chosen by the participating teams, which, for the Morocco vs. Brazil match, included Arabic and Portuguese.

FIFA faces significant logistical challenges in accommodating every language, and while it is impractical to offer translators for every dialect globally, the organization acknowledges that allowing questions in various languages without adequate translation poses accessibility issues for players and media alike. By permitting teams to choose one language, FIFA aims to streamline communication, but this raises questions about the inclusion of non-English speakers.

While the decision to support Spanish speakers is a positive step for many, it does not address the broader accessibility concerns for journalists and fans who may speak other languages. The policy change, though beneficial for Spanish speakers, leaves the potential for similar misunderstandings with speakers of other languages unaddressed.
