FIFA Exonerates Referee Shaun Evans Following Racism Allegations

FIFA has determined that referee Shaun Evans acted appropriately after being accused of making a racist gesture before the match between Germany and Curaçao on Sunday. The controversy arose from footage showing Evans in the video referee booth, where he appeared to form an "OK" sign, a gesture that has been controversially linked to white supremacy.

In response to the allegations, the Australian referee explained that the gesture was merely an "involuntary, subconscious twitch." He emphasized, "I would like to clarify that I did not intentionally make a hand gesture or symbol to communicate a message, affiliation, game or belief of any kind." Evans further elaborated that he was unaware of his actions at the time and noted that he had repeated similar movements while holding a pen during the game.

After a thorough review, FIFA's independent Disciplinary Committee stated that there was no evidence supporting claims of misconduct against Evans. They acknowledged his explanation, affirming, "The Disciplinary Committee can confirm that, after looking into the matter involving support video assistant referee Shaun Evans, it has found no evidence of breaches of the FIFA Disciplinary Code."

The "OK" gesture was labeled a hate symbol by the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) in 2019, but the organization has also warned against hastily interpreting its use as a sign of white supremacy. "Because of the traditional meaning of the 'OK' hand gesture, as well as other usages unrelated to white supremacy, particular care must be taken not to jump to conclusions about the intent behind someone who has used the gesture," the ADL stated.
