FIFA's Name Change Policy for World Cup Venues Explained

As the countdown to the 2026 World Cup begins, stadiums across the United States, Canada, and Mexico are undergoing significant transformations. Notably, the iconic Mercedes-Benz logo has been obscured at Atlanta's Mercedes-Benz Stadium with a FIFA-branded banner, and Gillette Stadium in Foxborough has been draped in white coverings to hide its sponsor's branding. Kansas City has taken a more drastic approach by completely removing the "GEHA" name from its venue, now simply referred to as Kansas City Stadium.

This branding overhaul is part of FIFA's regulations, which prohibit the display of any sponsorships not officially recognized by the organization during the tournament, set to commence on June 11. This practice is a longstanding tradition for FIFA's international events.

Without their usual branding, stadiums will primarily be identified by their city names. Thus, fans can expect to see games hosted at "Atlanta Stadium," "Boston Stadium," "Kansas City Stadium," and similar titles across the board.

However, there are two notable exceptions to this branding policy for the upcoming tournament. Atlanta Stadium has been permitted to retain the Mercedes-Benz logo on its roof due to concerns about potential damage from the removal process, following extensive discussions. Meanwhile, BC Place in Vancouver will continue to be known as "BC Place Vancouver," reflecting its existing name and its status as a publicly owned venue without a corporate sponsor.

The 2026 World Cup is set to be historic, featuring matches in 16 cities and expanding the tournament to include 48 teams, resulting in a record 104 games. The inaugural match will take place at Estadio Banorte, also known as Mexico City Stadium, featuring a clash between Mexico and South Africa, while the final will be held at MetLife Stadium, which will be called New York New Jersey Stadium for the event.
