Florida Gators Baseball Faces Pitching Departures as Three Players Enter Transfer Portal

Following the opening of the NCAA transfer portal on Monday, three Florida Gators pitchers, including left-handed sophomore McCall Biemiller, have announced their intentions to transfer. Junior Christian Rodriguez confirmed his entry into the portal on Thursday, while juniors Matthew Jenkins and freshman Cooper Moss made their announcements earlier in the week.

Rodriguez, who had previously shone as a high school standout, was named MaxPreps National Player of the Year in 2023. However, injuries, including Tommy John surgery, hindered his collegiate performance. In 2025, he made 22 appearances, striking out 31 batters but finishing with a 5.32 ERA. This spring, he struggled with a 20.25 ERA over just 1 1/3 innings, prompting the need for a change of scenery.

Jenkins demonstrated promise during his time at Florida, particularly in a standout game against South Florida in 2025 where he struck out seven batters over 2 2/3 hitless innings. Despite showing flashes of talent, he faced challenges against SEC opponents and played limited games due to injuries. After two seasons, he has opted to seek new opportunities elsewhere.

Cooper Moss, who did not see action in 2026, expressed a deep connection to the Gators program but acknowledged the necessity of considering his future. "It's definitely tough," he remarked. "You love the program, but you have to do what's best for you." Moss, a record-setting pitcher from J.R. Arnold High School, boasted impressive mechanics and a strong fastball, which should help him find a new team quickly.

As the Gators navigate these departures, they will also look to bolster their roster with six new pitchers in the 2026 recruiting class, although only one is viewed as a potential high draft pick. Coach Kevin O'Sullivan has indicated his intention to target left-handed pitchers in the transfer portal moving forward.
