Former Eagles Tight End Hakeem Butler Secures NFL Opportunity After UFL Success

Football careers can often take unexpected turns, with some athletes emerging as stars right away while others must navigate a more challenging path. Hakeem Butler, a former tight end for the Philadelphia Eagles, exemplifies this latter journey.

Butler's persistence and a remarkable season in the United Football League (UFL) have led him to another opportunity in the NFL. According to NFL insider Mike Garafolo, the Denver Broncos have signed Butler following his impressive performance with the St. Louis Battlehawks. This makes him one of the first players from the 2026 UFL season to earn an NFL contract, providing Butler with a chance to reinvigorate his professional career.

Selected by the Arizona Cardinals in the fourth round of the 2019 NFL Draft, Butler's path has been anything but straightforward. After a successful college career at Iowa State, his NFL experience became complicated as he moved between various teams. In 2020, he joined the Eagles after being signed from the Carolina Panthers' practice squad, where the team saw potential in converting him from wide receiver to tight end. However, this transformation never fully took off.

During his time with the Eagles, Butler played in two games and frequently transitioned between the active roster and practice squad. Although he signed a reserve/future contract in early 2021, he was released after training camp ended. Many players might have considered stepping away from the sport after such setbacks, but Butler remained committed to pursuing his football dreams.

His determination ultimately led him to the UFL, where he flourished with the Battlehawks, becoming one of the league's top offensive players over three seasons. His standout performance was recognized on June 10, when he was awarded UFL Offensive Player of the Year for the second time, solidifying his reputation as a player to watch.

Now, with the Broncos offering him another chance, Butler faces the challenge of securing a spot on the team during training camp and preseason. While the road ahead is uncertain, reaching this point is a significant achievement for Butler, as he continues to pursue his NFL aspirations fueled by resilience and hard work.
