Giannis Antetokounmpo Trade Speculation Heats Up Ahead of NBA Draft
The speculation surrounding Milwaukee Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo has reached a fever pitch, yet no concrete developments have emerged. The 31-year-old forward has not expressed a desire to leave the team, nor have the Bucks indicated a willingness to part with one of their franchise's all-time greats. However, NBA analyst Zach Lowe suggests that a trade could be imminent as the draft approaches.
On a recent episode of his podcast for The Ringer, Lowe mentioned, “I would still bet on him — I want to use that language — getting traded before the draft. I think everyone kind of wants this to happen.” The NBA Draft is set for June 23, with the second round scheduled for June 24, heightening the urgency surrounding potential moves.
Lowe criticized reports suggesting that the Bucks are not satisfied with the Miami Heat's trade offer, questioning why they haven't finalized a deal if they truly valued it. He noted, “If they loved Miami’s offer I think he’d be on Miami and would have been on Miami, like, two months ago.” Other teams, including the Boston Celtics, are reportedly in the mix, with the possibility of additional, less-publicized contenders also lurking.
Antetokounmpo’s future may hinge on whether he signals a willingness to sign an extension this October. Lowe believes that a trade is likely before the draft, as the Bucks would prefer to secure a first-round pick during this draft event.
Since leading the Bucks to their first championship since 1971 and earning Finals MVP honors in 2021, Antetokounmpo has seen his team struggle to advance in the playoffs, failing to progress beyond the Eastern Conference semifinals in recent years. This past season was particularly challenging for him, as he played only 36 games due to injuries, marking the lowest total of his 13-year career in the NBA.
