Giants Seek Solutions to Revive Disappointing 2026 Season

The San Francisco Giants are finding their 2026 season increasingly difficult to swallow. As the season progresses, it's clear that the team's struggles have caught many off guard. Initially, excitement surrounded the debut of manager Tony Vitello, who lacks major league experience, and the returning roster featuring talents like Casey Schmitt, Matt Chapman, and Willy Adames. The arrival of Tyler Mahle and Luis Arraez, along with a full season from Rafael Devers, further fueled optimism. However, that optimism has dissipated as the team now sits with a disappointing 25-38 record, one of the worst in the league and at the bottom of the NL West standings.

The Giants have recently lost seven out of their last ten games, only breaking the losing streak with two victories against the Milwaukee Brewers. Prior to that, their only win came from a dramatic 19-6 victory over the Colorado Rockies on May 31. The team's offensive challenges have contributed to a season that could lead to their first 100-loss campaign since 1985, prompting a need for action to salvage what remains of the year.

Despite the current challenges, there is still a glimmer of hope for the Giants. Historically, teams have turned their seasons around even when facing similar records. For instance, the 2005 Houston Astros managed to clinch a postseason berth after starting with an 18-32 record. The Giants must now consider several strategies to improve their situation as they look ahead to the remaining 99 games.

One option is trading Rafael Devers. The 29-year-old third baseman, who is in the midst of a massive 10-year, $313 million contract, has not performed to the expectations set when he joined the team. While there is still potential for him to regain his form, the Giants may benefit from moving him to a team that could better utilize his skills, potentially freeing up significant financial resources.

Another strategy involves shedding high salaries across the roster. The Giants have substantial financial commitments, and clearing some of these contracts could allow them to pursue more impactful players in the future. Trading Devers would be a step in this direction, but other high earners like Chapman and Robbie Ray would also need consideration, despite their no-trade clauses.

If trading key players proves too challenging, the Giants may need to invest in their younger talent. This approach could provide a much-needed spark and allow the team to build for the future. “They just have to hope that they start playing better,” said ESPN baseball insider Buster Olney, who acknowledged the difficulties facing the Giants. Ultimately, the team’s path forward may depend on their willingness to embrace change and invest in their promising prospects.
