Hartland Girls Lacrosse's Title Hopes Dashed by Rockford in Semifinals
EAST LANSING — The Hartland girls lacrosse team faced a tough challenge as they sought to return to the state championship game, having previously reached the finals in 2025. Despite losing several key players from that runner-up squad, head coach Ryan Skomial believed in his team's potential to compete effectively this season. Hartland proved their mettle once again, making it to the state semifinals for the fifth consecutive year.
Unfortunately for the Eagles, their journey ended with a 9-4 defeat against Rockford during the semifinal match held at East Lansing High School on June 3. "I think it was really special," reflected Skomial on the season. "We graduated a lot of girls and I think a lot of people might have written us off early in the season." The team faced ups and downs throughout the year, including a narrow overtime loss to East Grand Rapids, yet they persevered and united as a family to reach the final four.
Amanda Norton was the standout performer for Hartland, scoring all four of the team's goals, leading them to a 3-2 advantage at halftime with a goal just before the break. However, Rockford turned the tide in the latter part of the game, scoring six unanswered goals, with three of those coming in a pivotal stretch late in the third quarter.
"I think our attack just couldn't connect," Skomial noted about the second half. He praised the defensive efforts, particularly those of Claire Pielack in goal, but acknowledged that the team struggled with their shooting. "Rockford's defense was great," he added, emphasizing the difficulty of mounting a comeback once the opposition gained momentum.
Despite the loss, Skomial expressed pride in his team's achievements, highlighting their resilience throughout the season. Hartland concluded the season with a record of 13-7, demonstrating their ability to compete at a high level even after significant roster changes.
