Holland High School Launches Construction of First On-Campus Football Stadium
HOLLAND - A long-held ambition is finally taking shape as Holland High School breaks ground on its inaugural football stadium. Established in 1897, the school's football team has a storied tradition but has always played its home games off-campus, previously at Riverside Park and Holland Municipal Stadium, now known as Hope College's Ray & Sue Smith Stadium. The new stadium and athletic complex is set to be completed by 2027.
"Nothing beats your own place. It is going to be something special," expressed Holland coach Will Siffin during the groundbreaking ceremony held on June 1. He emphasized the pride that comes with creating a lasting legacy, stating, "This stadium is going to be here long after I'm gone." Funding for the project was made possible by a millage passed by voters for Holland Public Schools in 2025.
During the ceremony, Siffin was joined by Superintendent Nick Cassidy, Athletic Director Blake Muller, school board members, and students who took the first ceremonial shovels of dirt near where the 50-yard line will be located. Notably, some of the current sophomore starters, like quarterback Eli Wolters and receiver Finn Galloway, will be seniors when the stadium opens its doors in 2027.
"It is so exciting. I can't wait for it to be ready so we can play on this field," said Wolters, highlighting the advantages of having a home field, such as a supportive community and the elimination of bus rides for home games. He added, "I am already imagining the first game at the new stadium with all of the community in the stands. It is going to be awesome."
Beyond football, the new facility will include a track, baseball and softball fields, and a dedicated space for the marching band to practice and hold events. Band member Alex Perales noted the current challenges with field conditions, stating, "Getting this new field is going to make a world of a difference. We are excited for this new addition."
The baseball and softball fields are expected to be completed in time for the 2027 spring season. The groundbreaking event saw a large turnout of community members, staff, athletes, alumni, and students, all eager to witness the beginning of this significant development.
"I feel lucky being in the place I am at the time I am with all the great support around us," Siffin remarked. He believes the new stadium will not only elevate expectations for the team but also foster a sense of pride within the community. "Building this home field is such a big part of us coming together in trying times and in a challenging district," he concluded.
