Indiana Fever Bounces Back with Victory as Kelsey Mitchell Shines
The Indiana Fever rebounded from a significant defeat to secure a victory in their Commissioner’s Cup opener on Thursday night. Facing the Atlanta Dream, led by Angel Reese, the Fever triumphed with a score of 83-71, showcasing standout performances from Kelsey Mitchell and a determined Caitlin Clark, who reportedly experienced vomiting just before the second half began.
The cause of Clark’s illness remains uncertain, but it did not hinder her performance in the second half. After a lackluster start, she contributed to building a comfortable double-digit lead for Indiana and delivered one of her strongest defensive outings of the season. Clark concluded the game with 17 points, shooting 6-of-17, alongside 8 assists and 7 rebounds.
Mitchell was instrumental in the Fever's offensive success, scoring 25 points on 11-of-15 shooting. This game also marked a personal milestone for her, as she surpassed 5,000 career points, maintaining the WNBA's third-longest streak of scoring in double digits. Aliyah Boston also made a notable impact, adding 19 points, 7 rebounds, 3 blocks, and 2 assists to the mix.
Entering the match at a 4-4 record after consecutive losses to the Golden State Valkyries and Portland Fire, Indiana was in dire need of a turnaround. Their performance against the top-seeded Dream provided just that, with a strong defensive showing that limited Atlanta to the fewest points they have scored all season. No Dream player exceeded 13 points, and the team collectively managed a shooting percentage of just 34.8%.
Reese, despite the setback, registered 11 points on 4-of-9 shooting and secured 10 rebounds, making her the fastest player in Dream history to achieve both 100 points and 100 rebounds.
