Jacob Misiorowski Achieves Rare 'Maddux' Feat in Dominant Performance
On June 12, Jacob Misiorowski delivered a stunning performance, leading the Milwaukee Brewers to a 6-0 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies. In just 95 pitches, Misiorowski struck out 15 batters, setting a record for the most strikeouts in a complete-game shutout thrown with fewer than 100 pitches.
This remarkable achievement is known as a "Maddux," a term coined after Hall of Fame pitcher Greg Maddux, who accomplished this feat 13 times during his illustrious career. The phrase has even been adopted by Major League Baseball in its glossary, with Maddux's record including a notable game where he managed to complete nine shutout innings with only 89 pitches, although his team won in the 10th inning after he was substituted.
While a Maddux is a rare occurrence, the Brewers have had 12 such instances in team history. Most recently, Kyle Lohse threw a 93-pitch shutout against the Cubs on June 1, 2014, marking the last Maddux for the team before Misiorowski's achievement. The previous record for strikeouts in a Maddux belonged to Clayton Kershaw and Tarik Skubal, both of whom had 13 strikeouts in their respective games.
Misiorowski’s performance was not only a milestone for him personally but also placed him among an elite group of pitchers. He is now the seventh pitcher in Brewers history to throw a Maddux, surpassing the previous best for strikeouts in such a game, which was held by Chris Bosio with nine strikeouts.
This achievement further solidifies Misiorowski's burgeoning reputation, as he continues to build a case for one of the finest pitching seasons in Brewers history.
