Jase Bowen Receives Major League Call-Up; Lake Elsinore Storm Expands Lead
Outfielder Jase Bowen has made headlines after being called up to the major leagues following a standout performance in Spring Training with the San Diego Padres. Bowen, who hit four home runs during the preseason, was initially a late addition to Triple-A El Paso. His impressive showing has led to his first call-up, announced on Monday. On May 31, he notched his 13th home run for the Chihuahuas, boasting a remarkable 45.5% hard-hit rate, with his top exit velocity reaching 112.6 mph. Bowen is known for his five-tool potential, and if he can reduce his 26.2% strikeout rate, he may well become a long-term asset in left field for the Padres. He steps in to fill the void left by Ramón Laureano, who is currently on the injured list due to right hip inflammation.
In other developments, the Low-A Lake Elsinore Storm has been on a roll, winning five out of six games against the Inland Empire 66ers and extending their lead in the California League South to two games ahead of the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes. The Storm now holds a record of 30-21. Unfortunately, catcher Ty Harvey, who recently returned from a hamstring injury, is sidelined again after suffering a broken hand and will be out until July. Meanwhile, infielder Luke Cantwell has also faced injury issues, paving the way for Kerrington Cross, who has seized the opportunity with a .307 batting average and 1.040 OPS.
Cross, 24, has excelled with eight doubles, two triples, six home runs, and 24 RBIs over 114 at-bats, putting him on the radar for a potential promotion to Fort Wayne. Another player to watch is 22-year-old Ryan Wideman, a third-round draft pick from 2025. As an outstanding defensive center fielder, Wideman has demonstrated his hitting capability with a .314 batting average, 36 RBIs, and an impressive 36 stolen bases, the highest in minor league baseball this season.
On the pitching side, the Storm's staff has been steady enough to maintain their top position, led by starter Winyer Chourio, who has posted a 3.38 ERA with 56 strikeouts in 34.2 innings. Reliever Nick Falter has also shined, holding a 2.08 ERA in 34.2 innings. In contrast, lefty Kruz Schoolcraft, the Padres' first-round pick in 2025, is still finding his footing with an 8.03 ERA over nine starts, struggling with command.
Meanwhile, the Fort Wayne TinCaps faced challenges this past week, ending with a 1-5 record. Outfielder Jake Cunningham remains a bright spot with a .301 average and 14 home runs, while the pitching staff, including Kash Mayfield and Carson Montgomery, has experienced ups and downs. The San Antonio Missions also had a mixed week, finishing 3-3 against the Corpus Christi Hooks, with catcher Ethan Salas continuing to impress and potentially eyeing a promotion as the season progresses.
