Jesse Marsch Highlights Canadian Pride Ahead of World Cup Opener
Jesse Marsch, the head coach of Canada’s national soccer team, revealed that he often had to "beg" players from the U.S. team to sing the national anthem, contrasting that with the enthusiasm of his Canadian squad. As Canada prepares to make its World Cup debut against Bosnia and Herzegovina in Toronto, Marsch encouraged the team to embrace the excitement of co-hosting the prestigious tournament.
Since taking the helm two years ago, Marsch has been vocal about the diverse backgrounds of his players, fostering a sense of unity among them. “When I first came, I had to learn a lot about what it meant to be Canadian,” he stated, emphasizing the importance of inclusivity and camaraderie within the team. His players, hailing from various cultural backgrounds, share a deep pride in representing their country, which Marsch finds inspiring.
“Every one of these boys is incredibly Canadian and the pride they have in putting on the jersey… they want to show the country how proud they are to be Canadians,” he remarked. This sense of national pride is expected to be palpable during their match at Toronto Stadium, the smallest venue of the tournament.
Marsch also shared positive news regarding the team’s health, confirming that midfielder Ismaël Koné and center-back Moïse Bombito are fit to play, while providing an optimistic update on captain Alphonso Davies, who is recovering from a hamstring injury. “We did an MRI with him yesterday; it showed very positive signs that he is healing incredibly well,” said Marsch, indicating that Davies could return to action soon.
As the opening match approaches, concerns over weather conditions have arisen after a fan festival was evacuated due to lightning during another match. However, Marsch is confident that his team will be well-prepared for the challenges ahead. “All of us in North America are used to this… it’s going to be warm, but we’ll be ready,” he concluded.
