Jim Schwartz Reflects on Departure from Browns Following Coaching Change
Former Cleveland Browns defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz has opened up about his exit from the team, following the hire of Todd Monken as head coach. Schwartz's departure comes on the heels of significant changes for the franchise, including the recent trade of star defensive player Myles Garrett to the Los Angeles Rams.
In a recent interview on the Ryan Ripken Show, Schwartz expressed his disappointment at being overlooked for the head coaching position despite leading a successful defensive unit over the past three seasons. "We had a lot of success on defense, and the Browns made a change at head coach, and they passed over me," Schwartz stated. He acknowledged that the organization opted for Monken, who previously served as offensive coordinator for the Baltimore Ravens. "They wanted to go with an offensive guy, and they chose Todd. I'm fine with that," he added, though he noted the difficulty of remaining with a team after being passed over for a promotion.
Schwartz, who previously coached the Detroit Lions from 2009 to 2013, saw considerable success in Cleveland, where the defense thrived under his leadership. Last season, Garrett recorded 23 sacks and earned his second Defensive Player of the Year award, while rookie Carson Schwesinger captured Defensive Rookie of the Year honors. Schwartz felt his contributions warranted consideration for the head coach role, making his resignation feel inevitable after the Browns' decision.
With Schwartz now gone, the Browns have appointed Mike Rutenberg as the new defensive coordinator. As the team prepares for the 2026 season, they face the challenge of moving forward without both Schwartz and Garrett, two key figures responsible for their defensive prowess. The timing of Schwartz's comments following Garrett's trade raises questions about the future dynamics of the team as it seeks to revitalize its offense under Monken's leadership.
The upcoming months will reveal whether Rutenberg can uphold the high standards set by Schwartz or if the Browns will experience a downturn in performance without their former coordinator and star defender.
