Josh Hart's Versatile Impact Shines in NBA Finals Opener

SAN ANTONIO — Josh Hart's performance in Game 1 of the 2026 NBA Finals left even his teammate Mikal Bridges astonished. "I talked to him after the game, and just reading his stat line — I think it was like 3 [points], 15 [rebounds], 6 [assists], 4 steals, something like that," Bridges remarked during the Knicks' practice on Thursday. "It's a crazy stat line. Like, Bill Russell crazy." Yet, Bridges insisted that the numbers alone didn’t fully capture Hart's contributions.

Knicks head coach Mike Brown echoed this sentiment, noting that while Jalen Brunson's crucial fourth-quarter scoring would grab headlines, Hart's significant influence on the game was less visible. "He impacted the game in so many different ways for us," Brown stated. "You know, when you look at what he shot from the field, you wouldn't think that he was probably the most impactful guy in the game last night."

Despite being plagued by foul trouble early on and spending most of the second quarter on the bench, Hart's tenacity was evident. "Yeah, you know what Josh is going to do," teammate Karl-Anthony Towns said. "He's going to play hard. He's going to be a dawg. He's going to go out there and find a way to get the job done." Hart’s relentless energy and determination to contribute were key to the Knicks’ strategy, especially against a formidable opponent.

In the lead-up to the Finals, Hart anticipated facing Spurs star Victor Wembanyama defensively, but the game presented unexpected challenges. "I was about to call a timeout and tell him to switch," Hart recalled when he saw Julian Champagnie guarding him instead. Yet, he quickly adapted, creating space and drawing Wembanyama away from the basket, which opened up opportunities for his teammates.

Hart's ability to spark fast breaks was crucial, as the Knicks managed to score 10 fast-break points in the second half, compared to just one for San Antonio. Towns pointed out Hart’s contributions, noting, "When the game came down to it and you look at the stat sheet, he led us in rebounds, and it was something that just came with his pure effort." His role as an energy source for the team is a vital asset as the Knicks continue their historic playoff run.
