J.T. Poston and Ryan Gerard Share Lead at Memorial Tournament Amid Tough Conditions
The Memorial Tournament in Dublin, Ohio, has proven to be a challenging affair for participants, and the final round promises to be even tougher. After a weather-interrupted third round on Saturday, J.T. Poston and Ryan Gerard find themselves tied at the top, each sitting at 9-under-par after five holes of play that were cut short due to inclement weather.
"It's a grind," Gerard commented on the demanding course, noting the mental and physical challenges it presents. He mentioned battling allergies and navigating thick rough that complicates shots, adding, "Every time you hit a golf ball that's 50/50, it wants to kind of bounce into the rough and just, like, plop down into the nastiest stuff."
Poston, who held the lead after the second round, played his first five holes of the third round at even par, while Gerard managed to gain a stroke. Sam Burns trails closely at 8-under, with Eric Cole positioned at 6-under. Play is set to resume at 7:30 a.m. on Sunday, with the final round commencing later in the morning as players take to the course in threesomes from both the first and tenth tees.
World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, currently at 1-under for the tournament, showcased a strong front nine, including an eagle on the par-5 seventh. However, his momentum faltered with bogeys on the 12th and 14th holes just before play was suspended again due to thunderstorms. This marked another instance this season where weather has disrupted the PGA Tour, reminiscent of the challenges faced during the Valero Texas Open in early April.
