Julian Quinones Scores as Mexico Dominates South Africa in World Cup Opener
The long-awaited 2026 FIFA World Cup kicked off on Thursday, with Mexico taking on South Africa in the inaugural match of Group A. The host nation quickly established their dominance on home turf.
Just nine minutes into the first half, forward Julian Quinones netted the opening goal, a shot that slipped between the legs of South Africa's goalkeeper Ronwen Williams, igniting a roar from the crowd. As the match progressed, Raul Jimenez added to the scoreline with a header, solidifying Mexico's 2-0 lead. Despite several attempts from South Africa, they struggled to penetrate Mexico's defense.
With an impressive turnout of 800,000 fans at Estadio Azteca, Mexico celebrated a strong start to the tournament. Quinones, who also plays for Al-Qadsiah in the Saudi Pro League, received a heartfelt message from his wife, Ana Gabriela, a social media influencer, who celebrated his accomplishment with the words, “El primer goal del Mundial!!” or “The first goal of the World Cup!” on her Instagram.
Quinones, who nearly scored again with a shot that hit the post, was later awarded the Man of the Match title for his outstanding performance. “I’m happy and excited to have scored in this packed stadium and with the fans supporting us the whole time,” he remarked after the game, highlighting the team's collective effort in securing the victory.
This win is crucial for Mexico, providing a confidence boost as they aim for success in the tournament. Their next challenge will be against South Korea next week in Guadalajara, while South Africa prepares to face Czechia in Atlanta.
