Julius Erving Chooses LeBron James Over Kobe Bryant
In the ongoing debate about the greatest NBA players of the last two decades, LeBron James and the late Kobe Bryant often dominate the conversation. The Los Angeles Lakers have had the unique honor of featuring both of these basketball legends, with only a two-year interval between Bryant's retirement in 2016 and James' entry into the league.
Lakers fans are particularly divided when it comes to deciding who reigns supreme between Bryant and James. Both players represent a significant evolution in the wing position, a lineage that can be traced back to Hall of Famer Julius Erving, who was instrumental in popularizing basketball during the late 20th century.
In an interview with "The Schmo," Erving shared his perspective on the rivalry, stating his preference for James. “I think LeBron is one-of-one,” he remarked. He went on to describe Bryant as “another sort of imitation of Michael Jordan,” highlighting the numerous players who have attempted to emulate Jordan’s style, while noting that “LeBron is like one of one so I’ma give him his pick.”
Although many have sought to mirror Michael Jordan's brilliance, Bryant arguably came the closest to achieving that level of greatness. However, James stands apart from historical comparisons; while he shares some attributes with Erving, particularly as a formidable presence in transition, he is also an exceptional passer and was recognized for his defensive skills during his prime.
Remarkably, at 41 years old, James led the NBA in fast-break points per game during the recent regular season. In contrast, Erving concluded his career at 37, after an impressive 16 seasons across both the NBA and the American Basketball Association (ABA).
