Justin Jefferson Discusses Quarterback Challenges Ahead of Vikings Season
Last season, the Minnesota Vikings saw a dip in wide receiver Justin Jefferson's performance, which he attributes to the team's quarterback struggles. In 2025, Jefferson recorded 84 receptions, totaling 1,048 yards and just two touchdowns. This was a stark contrast to his impressive 2024 stats, where he amassed 1,533 yards and 10 touchdowns on 103 catches, primarily while playing alongside Sam Darnold.
To bolster their offense, the Vikings have brought in veteran quarterback Kyler Murray to compete with J.J. McCarthy for the starting position. Jefferson is currently familiarizing himself with Murray's playing style and plans to collaborate with both quarterbacks during the interim between OTAs and training camp.
Speaking to the media this week, Jefferson highlighted areas for improvement for both McCarthy and Murray. He pointed out that McCarthy, a former Michigan standout, could benefit from adding finesse to his throws. “Everything doesn’t have to be a hundred miles per hour; some throws he can put a little touch on it and get it to the spot,” Jefferson noted.
Murray, who was the first overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, is also in the process of adjusting to Jefferson's route-running techniques. “A new receiver that he’s throwing to, he’s trying to learn my route running, learning my moves, learning when I’m gonna break,” Jefferson explained. “Just working with each other, trying to build that chemistry.”
Jefferson acknowledged that both quarterbacks have distinct styles and approaches to the game. Earlier this week, Murray mentioned the challenges he faces in developing rapport with his receivers while adapting to a new offensive scheme alongside McCarthy. Jefferson’s insights underscore the necessity for the entire offense to adapt, regardless of who secures the starting role.
