Kings Softball Secures Historic Regional Title with Close Victory

Kings High School's softball team made history on Saturday by winning their first regional title, edging out Clayton Northmont with a score of 2-1 at Mason High School. Local fans showed their support in strong numbers, reminiscent of the enthusiastic "Red Sea" that traveled to Wright State earlier this year for the volleyball team's state championship victory.

Senior pitcher Neely McElhaney played a crucial role in the win, throwing 123 pitches—including 85 strikes—while striking out 10 batters and allowing only three hits and two walks. With the game on the line in the top of the seventh inning, she struck out Jabria Bickerstaff, prompting her teammates to rush the mound in celebration. "It’s so nice because I only live like 10 minutes away. I like being close to home, especially with the turnout we've had," McElhaney shared, highlighting the strong community support.

Julia Lowry opened the scoring in the second inning with her 11th home run of the season, contributing to a new program record of 38 home runs for the Knights. "To be able to put the team on the board and get the energy started is an amazing feeling," she said. Despite Northmont's strong season record, their journey included a notable comeback, defeating Troy 7-0 to reach the regional final.

Northmont's pitcher Jadyn Johnson showcased her talent, striking out 14 batters while allowing just four hits. However, Kings capitalized on her mistakes in the fourth inning, loading the bases before junior Emma Myles drew a walk that ultimately led to the decisive run. "I had to be as patient as I've ever been. It was a fun at-bat but it was nerve-wracking," Myles reflected.

Though Kings experienced some early defensive mishaps, committing three errors in the first three innings and allowing Northmont to tie the game, they tightened up as the game progressed. Coach John Schablein noted the nerves that may have contributed to their shaky start but praised his players for their resilience. "We settled down and played our game," he said.

With a remarkable 28-1 season record, the Knights are not just hitting their stride—they've been consistently strong since March. They now look ahead to their first-ever appearance in the state tournament, set to play against Painesville Riverside, who recently defeated Green 10-3. This exciting matchup will take place at 3 p.m. on June 6 at Akron Firestone Stadium, as Kings aims to continue their historic journey.
