Konnor Griffin Adapts to DH Role Amid Forearm Strain, Anticipates Return to Shortstop Soon

PITTSBURGH — Konnor Griffin, the promising 20-year-old rookie for the Pittsburgh Pirates, has recently faced a setback, sidelined by a mild muscle strain in his forearm flexors. This injury has limited his ability to play shortstop, forcing him to take on the designated hitter role instead.

Griffin missed Thursday's game against the Chicago Cubs and has since stepped into the DH position for two consecutive matchups against the Minnesota Twins. His performance has been impressive, accumulating four hits in nine at-bats, including a double, an RBI, a run scored, and two stolen bases. “It’s been good,” Griffin remarked, reflecting on his temporary role. “Really focusing on what I’m doing at the plate and getting to get off my feet a little bit.”

Adjusting to this new position has required a shift in Griffin's routine, as he now observes the game from the dugout instead of taking his usual place in the field during defensive innings. “Just watching reports on guys that might come in and checking out different [at-bats] that I have,” he explained, outlining how he stays engaged while waiting to return to defense.

Despite the frustration of being injured, Griffin maintains a positive outlook, viewing the downtime as a necessary break in the grueling 162-game season. “I’m just trying to take it as a positive thing to give me some rest before getting ready to continue to finish out the year,” he said.

While Griffin is currently satisfied with his DH duties, he is eager to return to shortstop. He expressed optimism about his recovery, stating, “I feel good that it should be sooner than later.” The Pirates' medical team is expected to evaluate him on Sunday, and if progress is made, he hopes to return to the field for defense soon. “I don’t know if I’m playing tomorrow, but I’ll try and be back out there on Tuesday,” he added.
