Kyle Snyder Secures Spot on U.S. Senior Wrestling Team for 2026 Championships
Former Ohio State wrestling standout Kyle Snyder has once again earned a place on the U.S. senior wrestling team, albeit after a challenging selection process. In a best-of-three wrestle-off at the 2026 Final X Trials, Snyder faced off against fellow American James Buchanan, marking the first time in a decade that Snyder lost to a compatriot. However, the seasoned wrestler rebounded to secure his spot on the team for a remarkable 12th consecutive year.
The competition saw Snyder winning the opening match 5-2, but he subsequently lost the second bout after a late takedown by Buchanan, leading to a decisive third match. In this final contest, Snyder showcased his prowess, defeating Buchanan convincingly with a score of 9-3. This victory ensures Snyder's participation in the upcoming 2026 Senior Wrestling World Championships, set to take place in Astana, Kazakhstan, from October 24 to November 1.
Competing in the 97 kg weight class, Snyder is expected to face tough opponents, including Iranian Olympic Champion Hassan Yazdani and six-time world champion Abdulrashid Sadulaev of Russia, who has been a significant rival for Snyder over the years. Snyder’s impressive collegiate career includes being a four-time All-American and contributing to Ohio State's NCAA team championship victory in 2015.
Currently training with the Penn State Nittany Lions wrestling club, Snyder continues to be a prominent figure in the wrestling community, maintaining his status as one of the top competitors in the sport.
