Lamar Jackson Faces New Challenges with Offensive Overhaul
Lamar Jackson finds himself navigating a fresh offensive landscape as he adapts to a new coordinator and system. This transition, while not unfamiliar to the quarterback, presents unique challenges that differ from previous changes he has encountered. The new offensive coordinator, Declan Doyle, who joined the team after a stint with Ben Johnson, is introducing innovative strategies that have left wide receiver Zay Flowers remarking that he’s "never seen before" elements in the playbook.
Jackson has been pushing himself harder than he has in any offseason since his rookie campaign. He stated, “I’m being challenged right now,” highlighting the complexity of the new system filled with unfamiliar terminology. Unlike past transitions, this one lacks continuity from the previous system, forcing Jackson to adapt quickly to new concepts.
Doyle’s coaching style is notably intense, often employing strong language to drive his points home, which Jackson admitted was a shift from what he was accustomed to. “I’m a coachable player,” Jackson noted. “Sometimes he sees things that I don’t see. Sometimes I see things that he might have not thought of. And it’s just great to have. We piggyback off of each other.”
Last season marked a challenging period for Jackson, as he ended with a 6-7 record—his first losing season—as well as 21 touchdowns to seven interceptions. He also recorded a career-low of 349 rushing yards and just two rushing touchdowns. As he embraces this new offensive direction, both Jackson and the team are aiming for significant improvement in the upcoming season.
