Louisville Kings Secure Playoff Spot with Victory Over Columbus Aviators
The Louisville Kings sealed their playoff position as the No. 3 seed in the United Football League by defeating the Columbus Aviators 42-27 in their regular-season finale at Historic Crew Stadium on Sunday. This victory marked their fourth consecutive win, bringing their overall record to 6-4. The Kings are set to face the No. 2-seeded St. Louis Battlehawks at 6 p.m. on June 7 at The Dome at America's Center, aiming for a place in the UFL championship game, known as the United Bowl.
With the playoffs approaching, Kings head coach Chris Redman decided to rest starting quarterback Chandler Rogers after he scored on a 16-yard run late in the first quarter. N'Kosi Perry took over for the remainder of the first half, and Mike DiLiello stepped in after the first drive of the second half. The focus was on the running game, which produced an impressive 205 yards and four rushing touchdowns on 32 carries. Ian Wheeler led the charge with 99 yards and one touchdown, while Jaden Shirden made a significant impact, scoring twice in the fourth quarter to extend the Kings' lead.
The Kings' defense also played a crucial role in the win. Eric Garror set the tone early by intercepting Jalen Morton on the first play of the game and returning it 28 yards for a touchdown. Although the defense allowed 217 passing yards and 96 rushing yards, they limited the Aviators to just six points in the second half and recorded three sacks, totaling a loss of 32 yards for Columbus.
Looking ahead, the Kings will face a formidable opponent in the St. Louis Battlehawks, who boast the best defense in the league. They have allowed the fewest yards per game and the second-fewest points. The Kings previously struggled against St. Louis in a 16-3 loss, where they were held to only six first downs and 166 total yards. "That's the best team we’ve played this year," Redman noted after that game. The Battlehawks recently lost to the Dallas Renegades, who managed to sack their quarterback seven times, highlighting potential vulnerabilities.
Redman expressed confidence in his team's potential, stating, "If we can execute and not shoot ourselves in the foot, this team's got a lot, a lot of potential; we really haven't even reached it yet." As the Kings prepare for their playoff matchup, excitement is building over the possibilities that lie ahead.
