Maple Leafs GM Chayka Makes Special Visit to Meet Top Draft Prospect Gavin McKenna in Whitehorse

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — Six years ago, Gavin McKenna left his hometown of Whitehorse, Yukon, in pursuit of his dream to play in the NHL. Now, as he stands on the brink of potentially being the first overall pick in this month’s draft, NHL interest has reached him in one of Canada’s most remote communities.

Toronto Maple Leafs general manager John Chayka recently made the journey to Whitehorse to meet with McKenna and his family. “It was obviously an honor for him to come up there,” McKenna remarked on Friday at the NHL pre-draft prospects combine in Buffalo. “Anytime he’s taking time out to come meet with you, it’s awesome.”

The significance of this meeting is heightened by the fact that the Maple Leafs, having won the draft lottery last month, hold the coveted No. 1 pick at the upcoming draft scheduled for June 26-27 in Buffalo. Chayka emphasized the importance of understanding McKenna as a person, not just as a player with impressive statistics. He noted, “I think there’s some real resolve around who he is and what his career means to him and his family. And I find it impressive.”

Currently ranked as the top North American prospect by NHL Central Scouting, McKenna has consistently lived up to expectations. Over his career, he has accumulated over a point per game, showcasing his skills on both domestic and international stages. After successfully transitioning from the Western Hockey League to Penn State, he proved his ability to thrive against older competitors, finishing his freshman year with 51 points (15 goals, 36 assists) in 35 games.

Despite being the front-runner, McKenna faces strong competition as four players are in the mix for the top selection. Central Scouting chief Dan Marr highlighted that teams' positional needs will greatly influence the draft order. Nevertheless, Marr maintains that McKenna is a standout talent that teams should not overlook.

Alongside his accomplishments, McKenna's time at Penn State was not without controversy, as he faced legal issues stemming from an on-campus incident earlier this year, which included charges of misdemeanor simple assault. Chayka indicated that he has addressed the situation and feels comfortable moving forward. As McKenna prepares for the next chapter, he acknowledges the challenges of adapting to life in a larger city, having grown up in a small community.
