Martinez Praises Ronaldo as He Prepares for Sixth World Cup
Roberto Martinez has expressed that Cristiano Ronaldo approaches his sixth World Cup with the same enthusiasm as he did for his first, calling the iconic player an "example and a reference for football" during a recent press conference. The 41-year-old veteran continues to inspire the younger generation while leading a talented Portuguese squad that is considered a strong contender for the tournament.
Despite discussions about Ronaldo's influence in the team, especially given his lack of goals in the last nine major tournament matches, Martinez maintains that the former Manchester United star is crucial to Portugal's offensive strategy. "Internally it seems to be his first World Cup in terms of intensity," Martinez noted, emphasizing Ronaldo's importance in guiding the team.
Bruno Fernandes, captain of Manchester United, reflected on growing up watching Ronaldo during his breakout years, including the Euro 2004 final. "It's such an honour to play next to him now," he remarked. Fernandes, along with a strong midfield that includes Vitinha and Joao Neves, is hopeful for Portugal's chances, stating, "Our dream is to be there (winning the World Cup) and I think that dreaming is not forbidden."
Portugal is set to face DR Congo in their opening match, with Martinez cautioning against complacency. He highlighted the unpredictability of World Cup matches, referencing Spain's unexpected draw with Cape Verde. Additionally, Martinez confirmed he will depart from his role after the tournament, focusing on completing the objectives set out since he took over the national team three and a half years ago.
