Mauricio Ruffy Joins Backup Contenders for UFC Freedom 250 Title Bout

WASHINGTON – Arman Tsarukyan may soon face added competition for the backup position at UFC Freedom 250. Mauricio Ruffy, who is set to compete against Michael Chandler this Sunday at the White House event, has expressed his willingness to step in as a backup for the lightweight title unification clash between Ilia Topuria and Justin Gaethje. While Ruffy (13-2 MMA, 4-1 UFC) keeps his focus on Chandler (23-10 MMA, 2-5 UFC), he is determined to make weight in line with championship standards, foregoing the one-pound allowance typically permitted for non-title fights.

Currently, Tsarukyan holds the official backup role for the eagerly awaited fight, but Ruffy is eager to make his case. "I'm 100 percent dedicated to this, and I'll be ready to fight for a championship," he stated in Portuguese during the UFC Freedom 250 media day. He added, "The talks that I've had with the UFC, and the team has had with the UFC, has led us to believe from recent conversations, and I'm just going to say to you guys right now that on Saturday, I'm making championship weight. In case the UFC needs me and something happens, I'll be making championship weight." He reassured fans that while his primary focus is on his upcoming bout, he remains prepared to seize the opportunity should it arise.

If Ruffy's backup offer isn't needed, his attention will shift back to his match with Chandler, a fighter renowned for his grappling skills. Ruffy's only defeat came last September against Benoit Saint Denis, where he struggled with grappling and ultimately succumbed to a submission. In reflecting on his growth, Ruffy noted, "I'm an athlete, and all of us are looking to want to develop. I've been looking to improve and get better and evolve as a fighter and always bring new things." He expressed confidence in his training and readiness, highlighting his previous success in overcoming challenges.
