Micah Parsons Provides Update on Recovery Timeline After ACL Injury

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — Green Bay Packers linebacker Micah Parsons has adjusted his expectations regarding his return from a torn ACL, indicating it may not happen as soon as he initially hoped. Following the Packers’ playoff exit against the Chicago Bears, Parsons expressed optimism about being ready for the season opener but now believes a return in Week 3 or 4 is more likely. During a press briefing on Wednesday, he offered a more cautious outlook on his recovery process.

Parsons underwent surgery on December 29, during which he also had his meniscus repaired. He mentioned he is adhering to a "nine-month rule" concerning his return timeline. When asked if this meant a nine-month delay before he can play or practice, he said, “I don’t know. I just know it’s a pure nine months (with) no football.” The nine-month period would conclude on September 29, after the Packers' third game, suggesting that he might need additional time to regain full readiness.

“I would definitely say it is hard for me to accept,” Parsons remarked, reflecting on the challenges of dealing with his injury. He emphasized the mental struggle of coming to terms with missing more time than anticipated, stating, “It constantly replays in my brain.” The standout player had an impressive first season with the Packers, recording 12½ sacks before his injury occurred in a game against the Denver Broncos, which the team ultimately lost.

As he continues his rehabilitation, Parsons is focusing on a long-term goal of returning for the playoffs rather than rushing back too soon. “The goal isn’t for me to go out there and re-hurt myself trying to force myself to get back the first few games,” he noted. He also expressed a desire to work under new defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon, who joined the team after the departure of Jeff Hafley.

Parsons is aware that recovery varies from player to player and has taken advice to help manage his expectations. He shared a doctor's insight that emphasized the importance of patience: “Sometimes you’ve just to lose the battle so you can win the war.” As he progresses, Parsons is committed to improving every day, focusing on his strength and overall recovery.

Following a significant trade that brought Parsons to the Packers from Dallas, he signed a substantial contract extension worth $188 million. In the midst of changes in the league, Parsons reflected on the competitive nature of the NFC, stating, “The NFC is shark infested. It’s like playoff football every week.”
