The Minnesota Board of Regents has officially approved a two-year extension for Athletic Director Mark Coyle, ensuring his position with the Golden Gophers through June 2032. This extension comes as Coyle's original contract was set to conclude at the end of 2023.

Coyle’s annual base salary will be set at $2 million for this year, with a planned $100,000 increase each subsequent year of the agreement. Additionally, he is slated to receive a one-time longevity bonus of $845,000 on June 30, 2026, along with further bonuses of $250,000 on June 30 for both 2027 and 2028. The bonuses will increase to $300,000 for the last four years of his extended contract.

In the event of termination without cause, Coyle's buyout amounts to $13.5 million in 2023, gradually decreasing to $2.5 million by 2031. Should he choose to leave voluntarily before 2030, a $500,000 buyout would apply, while there would be no buyout if he departs in 2023 or later. The contract also stipulates that both parties will aim to negotiate a renewal or new agreement by August 1, 2030.

This season marks Coyle's tenth year leading the Gophers' athletic program. Under his guidance, the academic performance of student-athletes has improved markedly, with a record cumulative GPA of 3.48 achieved in the 2025-26 academic year. Coyle has overseen the selection of 313 College Sports Communicators Academic All-District honorees and 92 Academic All-Americans, placing Minnesota tenth in all-time Academic All-America selections.

During his tenure, Minnesota has celebrated 26 conference championships and 22 individual NCAA national titles. Coyle's partnership with head football coach P.J. Fleck, who is also entering his tenth season in 2026, represents the longest-running athletics director and head coach collaboration in the Big Ten and the second longest in the country. Currently, Minnesota holds the 18th position in the Learfield Directors’ Cup standings, indicating a prominent ranking within Division I athletics.
