Mitch Marner Shines with Natural Hat Trick to Propel Golden Knights

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Mitch Marner, a leading contender for the Conn Smythe Trophy, delivered an impressive performance with a natural hat trick during the second period, propelling the Vegas Golden Knights to a commanding 4-0 lead against the Carolina Hurricanes in Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Final on Saturday night. Although the Hurricanes managed to narrow the gap to 4-3 midway through the third period, the Golden Knights held on for the win.

The scoring began when Tomas Hertl broke the deadlock in the second period, following an unusual sequence where Vegas had two goals disallowed due to challenges. Marner's first goal was set up when he seized a loose puck near the boards, firing a backhand shot that was inadvertently redirected into the net by Carolina defenseman Sean Walker, leaving goaltender Frederik Andersen with no chance.

Marner quickly added to the score, elegantly skating past Andersen to slide the puck home for a 3-0 lead just minutes later. His hat trick was capped off with a powerful shot from the right circle, igniting a shower of hats from jubilant fans. Notably, Marner's natural hat trick occurred in just 6 minutes and 10 seconds, marking the fastest in Stanley Cup history.

During a post-period interview, Marner emphasized the importance of teamwork, stating, “I can’t do it by myself, that’s for sure. All five guys have been on a great page. I’ve liked our line’s play for the last month.” His contribution also included an assist on Hertl’s opening goal, bringing his total to four points in the period—tying the record for the most points in a single period since 1919.

So far in his inaugural postseason with the Golden Knights, the 29-year-old Marner has accumulated 28 points, setting a record for the most points by any player in their first playoff run with a new team. He has scored 10 goals in 19 playoff games with Vegas, a notable increase compared to his 13 goals over 70 playoff games during his tenure with Toronto.
