Monday Musings: Hurricanes finish the weekend with a bang
Happy Monday, everybody. Hope your weeks have gotten off to a good start.
Without further ado, let’s get into it…
1) It wasn’t a perfect week for Miami Hurricanes recruiting by any means.
A big target, literally and figuratively, in their own back yard got away from them in five-star St. Thomas Aquinas OT Mark Matthews, who pulled the trigger with Texas A&M. Five-star Chicago (St. Patrick) DL David Folorunsho also picked Notre Dame over Miami.
I’m sure many of you all saw the Matthews commitment video. If not, well, there you go.
A tough loss, but that’s ‘crootin. It’s hard to get them all, but with the success that Miami has shown to have in developing their top offensive lineman over the last three years, and with how competitive Miami is in NIL, this was a tough one to swallow.
2) Former Miami Hurricanes director of recruiting Pop Cooney, now with A&M, had something to say about it as well.
Um….ABOUT THAT…
Seems a little bit more relevant and important. But anyways, where was I…
3) Despite all that, boy, Mario Cristobal had himself a nice Sunday, and part of it came at the expense of his old school.
He secured the commitment flip of 2027 four-star Dothan, AL CB Ai’King Hall from the Oregon Ducks.
Hall committed to Oregon on a visit in early April, and Miami got him to switch his commitment a little over a month later. He checks in as the No. 11 CB in On3/Rivals’ industry rankings. That means now that Miami has two of the top 11 cornerback commits in the class, with five-star Donte Wright flipping from Georgia earlier this month.
Last year proved just how crucial it is to have dudes in your secondary, and Miami is loading up with some young talent.
Speaking of Georgia, Miami also got a commitment from three-star Lake Worth, FL LB Jayvon Dawson over the Bulldogs on Sunday. He might be off the radar on the rankings services, but he is a playmaker, with 68 tackles, 22 TFLs and 8.5 sacks last season. Not bad.
4) Miami Hurricanes baseball showed in two innings just why they likely won’t go anywhere in the NCAA Tournament.
The Hurricanes held a 6-1 lead in the eighth inning against Florida State on Thursday in the series opener. And you can probably guess what happened next.
After Rob Evans’ brilliant one-run ball over seven innings, Lyndon Glidewell allowed five earned runs in 1.2 innings, and Florida State tied the game with two in the eighth and three in the ninth. FSU would go on to win 7-6 in 11 innings.
That was the most disgusting game of the entire season to watch, and it reinforces that this team just does not pitch well enough in the bullpen to do anything. Given Miami has a former pitching coach as its manager, that’s particularly bothersome to me.
It is what it is for the rest of this year, but it had damned well better improve next year. Miami should have no problem landing top-tier talent with its resources and history, and they had better finally find some relief arms next year. Because it’s going to sink them quickly this postseason.
