Morocco's Strategy to Recruit Dual Nationals Proves Fruitful
Morocco's initiative to encourage dual nationals to join its national football team has yielded impressive results, transforming the Atlas Lions into a formidable force in international football. Once considered a secondary option, dual-national players now make up a significant portion of the team across various age levels.
Historically, many talented footballers of Moroccan descent, such as Ibrahim Afellay from the Netherlands and Marouane Fellaini from Belgium, opted to represent their countries of birth. However, the Moroccan football federation has shifted its approach, making the recruitment of dual nationals a cornerstone of its strategy, especially following the team's remarkable semi-final run in the 2022 World Cup.
Ryan Mmaee, who chose to play for Morocco over Cameroon or Belgium, shared, "For me it was quite an easy choice to make." The Omonia Nicosia forward noted the federation's commitment to providing players with optimal conditions and a well-structured sporting project as key factors in his decision.
The Moroccan football federation uses a well-established network of scouts in Europe to identify promising young talent, leveraging the emotional ties that players have to their Moroccan heritage. Fathi Jamal, the federation's technical director, highlighted the blend of local development and targeted scouting as part of a "clear strategic vision." Head coach Mohamed Ouahbi also emphasized the importance of building relationships with dual-national players and their families.
Morocco's recruitment strategy gained momentum after missing the 1998 World Cup, leading to the inclusion of stars like Hakim Ziyech and Achraf Hakimi. Hakimi, now a key player for Paris Saint-Germain, expressed that representing Morocco was "the choice of the heart," reinforcing the emotional connection many dual nationals feel towards their heritage.
Despite the success, some dual-national players still opt for their birth countries, with Barcelona's Lamine Yamal being a notable example. Nevertheless, Morocco's investments in sports infrastructure have reaped rewards, highlighted by recent achievements such as reaching the semi-finals of the 2022 World Cup and winning the 2023 Under-23 Africa Cup of Nations.
As Morocco continues to build its football legacy, the influx of dual nationals has sparked debate in Europe, particularly in Belgium and the Netherlands. While some view this trend with skepticism, others recognize it as a player's right to choose their national affiliation.
