Moyes Reflects on Rooney's Unique Talent and His Journey to Everton

David Moyes, the current manager of Everton, has praised Wayne Rooney's exceptional abilities, calling him "the last of the street footballers" in English football. Moyes, who was in charge during Rooney's early career, handed the then-teenager his debut at the age of 16.

In a recent appearance on The Wayne Rooney Show, Moyes reminisced about his initial impressions of the young striker, describing him as "a cheeky Scouser" with immense talent. He recalled the skepticism surrounding Rooney's inclusion in the team, especially given the presence of experienced forwards like Kevin Campbell and Duncan Ferguson. "We were saying: 'He can't be that good at that age,'" Moyes noted, highlighting the challenges he faced when integrating Rooney into the squad.

Despite the obstacles, Moyes recognized Rooney's unique skill set and physical readiness for professional football, which he found remarkable for such a young player. "For me, Wayne was the last of the street footballers, or certainly the last of the ones I know of," he stated, emphasizing the rarity of Rooney's talent.

Moyes also shared his thoughts on accepting the managerial role at Everton back in 2002. He mentioned that he had received numerous offers from other Premier League clubs but felt a strong connection to Everton. "I had a brilliant opportunity to manage Everton," he said, recalling conversations with Sir Alex Ferguson, who advised him against taking other positions. Ultimately, the Everton job felt like the right fit for him at that time.
