Neenah and Notre Dame Academy Exit WIAA Division 1 Tennis Tournament
MADISON – In a tough day for local teams, both Neenah and Notre Dame Academy were eliminated from the Division 1 quarterfinals at the WIAA state team tennis tournament held on Friday, June 12, at Nielsen Tennis Stadium. Neenah faced off against Marquette University, ultimately falling 4-3.
Despite the loss, Neenah showcased strong performances, with Hunter Brown securing a victory in the No. 1 singles and Nicholas Zenzick winning at No. 4 singles. The doubles team of Brady Lawatsch and Luke Grassl also triumphed at No. 1. The Rockets finished their season with an overall record of 14-7.
Meanwhile, Notre Dame Academy was bested by Middleton, who won the match 5-2. The Tritons managed to claim victories through Alex Thomas at No. 1 singles and Augustine Luy at No. 2 singles, concluding their season with a 12-12 record.
In other quarterfinal matchups, Badger defeated Franklin 5-2, while Whitefish Bay dominated Hudson, winning 7-0. Looking ahead, Whitefish Bay is set to compete against Marquette in one semifinal match on Saturday, June 13, at 9 a.m., while Middleton will face Badger in the other semifinal.
Neenah, a fifth seed, marked its 12th appearance at state in the last 13 seasons, excluding the canceled 2020 season, and holds the second-most overall appearances in the competition's history. The team has claimed 10 championships since 1946, including five consecutive titles from 1991 to 1995.
Marquette, the fourth seed, continues to be a powerhouse, making its 19th consecutive appearance at state and winning 15 championships in total. Notre Dame Academy, returning to Division 1 this year, has had a storied history in the tournament, with two titles in Division 2.
