New Faces Shape Tupelo’s Path as They Aim for Championship Return

BOONEVILLE — As the Tupelo girls' basketball team looks to reclaim their spot in Jackson, they are integrating several newcomers into their lineup. This summer, the Golden Wave are welcoming four fresh starters as they prepare for the upcoming season. The team previously reached the state championship finals three consecutive years, clinching titles in both 2024 and 2025, before facing elimination in the quarterfinals last year.

Coach Matt Justice noted the noticeable influx of new talent, stating, “We've got a lot of new faces down, as you can tell. We’ve got four or five new girls that are kind of stepping into different roles, so we’re just trying to figure them out this summer and see what they can do so that we know what we have to work on come August.”

In a recent summer league matchup against New Hope at Northeast Mississippi Community College, the team saw promising performances from their newcomers, particularly eighth-grader Aubrey Thomas, who transferred from Ridgeland. Thomas led the Golden Wave with 13 points in a decisive 38-15 victory. Despite her young age of just 12, she has already attracted a Division I scholarship offer from UT Martin. “We're excited about her, and she's really young,” said Justice. “She’s got a lot to work on, but her ability right now, and raw ability at her age, is impressive.”

Another notable addition is Bri Macon, a senior who has transferred from Itawamba AHS, expected to provide versatility on offense. She contributed four points in the recent win. With a mix of seasoned players and newcomers, the entire program is aware of the high expectations as they prepare for the regular season.
