New Mexico United Earns Hard-Fought Draw on the Road
After a challenging journey to Hartford, Dennis Sanchez returned to the visiting locker room with a sense of accomplishment. The New Mexico United manager reflected on the significance of their 0-0 draw against Hartford Athletic, emphasizing the importance of small victories. “This is my third time coming here in three years and this is not an easy trip by any means,” he remarked. “It’s a good point on the road. Of course, you always want more, but we’ll take it.”
The match marked United's longest road trip this season, spanning 2,125 miles, and it proved to be their best showing in Hartford. Historically, the club has struggled in Connecticut, with Sanchez previously facing defeats during his tenure with Las Vegas Lights FC and last season with New Mexico.
“I thought just over the last couple of days in terms of travel and making sure the guys keep things light (Friday) with our training session, just do everything possible to make sure we’re in a good place physically, mentally, emotionally when the game starts,” Sanchez noted. His strategy seemed effective, as the team maintained a solid performance throughout the match.
New Mexico had opportunities to score, particularly in the first half. In the seventh minute, a promising play saw Greg Hurst set up Dayonn Harris, who unfortunately lost control. Ousman Jabang also missed a chance, shooting over the bar, and other attempts from Nial Ried-Stephen and Jabang were thwarted. Sanchez acknowledged the need for more scoring opportunities, saying, “Obviously, the more opportunities that you can create, the better.”
As the team prepares to return to Western Conference action against Phoenix Rising FC on June 6, Sanchez views the point gained in Hartford as valuable. “I think that we’ve adapted,” he concluded, highlighting the importance of this draw as they continue to develop their game.
