North Carolina Triumphs Over Ole Miss in CWS Opener
North Carolina kicked off its College World Series campaign with a 6-2 victory against Ole Miss on Friday, showcasing strong performances on the mound and at the plate. The Tar Heels' win was propelled by impressive pitching from Jason DeCaro, who logged nine strikeouts over 6 2/3 innings, and Caden Glauber, who contributed two strikeouts in 2 1/3 innings. A pivotal three-run homer in the eighth inning by catcher Colin Hynek sealed the deal for North Carolina.
DeCaro proved once again that he thrives under pressure, delivering another stellar performance reminiscent of his complete-game shutout against USC in the Super Regionals. He held Ole Miss's powerful offense in check, allowing only five hits and two earned runs. Reflecting on his approach, DeCaro stated, "Just trying to slow myself down a little bit," emphasizing the importance of focusing on one pitch at a time during his second start in Omaha. He noted that improving his execution in two-strike situations has played a significant role in his recent success.
The game's turning point came in the bottom of the eighth when Colin Hynek capitalized on a scoring opportunity. Following a hit-by-pitch for Cooper Nicholson and a two-out double from Tyler Howe, Hynek wasted no time, hitting a three-run homer on the first pitch he saw. “Going into the at-bat, they took a mound visit, and Coach Wierz was just letting me know from the dugout we’ve got our scouting reports,” he recalled. "Seeing it go over is a pretty cool feeling, to homer here. I just stuck to my plan."
North Carolina made the most of its chances, converting on 2-for-5 opportunities with runners on base. Gavin Gallaher contributed a crucial go-ahead RBI single, while Jake Schaffner added a game-tying sacrifice fly in the seventh inning. This performance marked a significant improvement for a Tar Heels team that had struggled with runners in scoring position during the Super Regionals, where they hit only .115.
The victory sets a positive tone for North Carolina as they look to advance further in the prestigious tournament.
