Northville Advances to MHSAA Boys Volleyball Semifinals with Narrow Victory Over Hartland

This past Tuesday, Northville secured a spot in the MHSAA boys volleyball Division 1 semifinals by defeating Hartland in a closely contested match that ended 3-0 at Novi High School. The No. 7 Mustangs faced stiff competition from the No. 8 Eagles, winning the sets with scores of 25-19, 25-23, and 25-22.

The intensity of the match was palpable, with one Northville parent describing it as “a frickin’ heartattack” to watch. Despite the final score suggesting a straightforward win, the game was characterized by fierce back-and-forth exchanges, particularly in the second set. Northville's Yuta Kikumori and Hartland's Jacob Dibert kept the pressure on with powerful kills, but it was Julian Janisse’s pivotal plays that shifted momentum in favor of the Mustangs.

Janisse, a senior and fourth-year varsity player, tied the second set at 19 with a critical kill. This was followed by a Hartland error that allowed Northville to take the lead. He later collaborated with teammate Josh Vertrees for a block that extended their advantage. “I just like to stay ready,” Janisse remarked, emphasizing the importance of teamwork in their success.

In the final set, Janisse shone once again, orchestrating a four-point serving run that included two aces, which helped erase a two-point deficit. Hartland made a notable effort to rally back, but Janisse's consistent scoring thwarted their attempts, culminating in a decisive kill that sealed the match.

Northville's first-year coach, Nyia Setla, praised the team's performance, particularly highlighting the contributions of their setter, Jude Butler. “He does an amazing job of reversing the flow and providing one-on-one opportunities for Julian to score,” she noted. The Mustangs, now with a record of 32-7-1, will take on Lake Orion in the state semifinals on Friday at Kellogg Arena in Battle Creek.

The Mustangs will need to maintain their composure against the No. 10 team, having previously faced Lake Orion and understanding the challenge ahead. “We just had to follow our game plan and trust that we’d eventually win,” Janisse stated, reflecting on their strategy moving forward.
