Ole Miss Season Ends as Troy Overcomes Four-Run Deficit in CWS Showdown

In a dramatic College World Series elimination match on June 14, Ole Miss was unable to maintain its early lead against Troy, ultimately falling 12-8 at Charles Schwab Field in Omaha, Nebraska. The Rebels began the game strong, with starting pitcher Hunter Elliott limiting the Trojans to just two runs over four innings.

The turning point came in the fifth inning when Troy scored a run due to a balk, igniting their offense. Soon after, Sean Darnell's double allowed the Trojans to narrow the gap to 6-5. Ole Miss head coach Mike Bianco acknowledged Troy's resilience, stating, “Credit Troy for getting the big hit and time and time again.” He noted that while Ole Miss managed to score, they struggled to contain Troy’s relentless offensive push.

As the game progressed into the seventh inning, the Trojans took the lead by scoring four runs, overcoming the Rebels' earlier advantage. After a home run and a single off reliever JP Robertson, Ole Miss called in top reliever Walker Hooks. However, Hooks faced challenges, starting with a four-pitch walk followed by a two-RBI double that allowed Troy to extend their lead.

Despite managing to escape the seventh inning, Hooks was replaced after conceding a leadoff home run to Blake Cavill in the eighth, having allowed three runs and three hits in just two-thirds of an inning. “We didn't want to bring him into the seventh today,” Bianco mentioned, reflecting on the strategic decisions made under pressure.

The Trojans capped off their comeback with two unearned runs in the eighth inning, benefiting from a dropped infield pop-up. Although Troy's regular season batting average stood at .285, they showcased impressive hitting prowess during the NCAA Tournament, averaging 9.9 runs and hitting .333 across their tournament games. Jabe Boroff, a designated hitter for Troy, emphasized the effectiveness of their coaching staff in preparing the team for such challenges, stating, “We always are fed the correct information.”

This loss marked the end of Ole Miss's season, while Troy advanced, demonstrating a significant turnaround in their offensive capabilities during the tournament.
