Trojans Triumph Over Keokuk, Remain Undefeated in Southeast Conference
FAIRFIELD — Just a day before their game, the Fairfield baseball field was nearly submerged after heavy rainfall from storms that swept through the area. The amount of water on the diamond was so significant that it required extensive effort to prepare the field for a Southeast Conference matchup against Keokuk on Friday.
Fairfield head coach Josh Allison noted, “We had water standing all the way from behind the field to the home plate area. We would have needed canoes and kayaks to get across the diamond on Thursday.” With the hard work of the coaching staff and players, the field was ready, and the Trojans showcased their skills, securing a decisive 15-0 victory over the Chiefs in just four innings.
Senior pitcher Dain Burkhart, who allowed only one hit in three innings of work, expressed gratitude for the efforts that went into preparing the field. “They told us they were out here getting the field ready for four hours starting at 8:30 a.m. I feel like they were probably here all day starting at 8:30 to get this field ready,” he said. “When we got here, it didn’t look like it had rained out here at all.”
Burkhart also acknowledged the resilience of his team, stating, “If our coaches wanted to get this game in, they were going to do whatever it took to make that happen. If they're willing to do that for us, we've got to be willing as a team to work just as hard to be successful when we get on the field.”
With this win, Fairfield improves to 4-0 in the Southeast Conference and 10-3 overall. The Trojans are set to face a challenging doubleheader against Burlington, who currently holds an impressive 11-2 record and is also undefeated in conference play.
